Gauge is the thickness of the metal sheet, and it's the single biggest factor in how much load a roof can take and how long it lasts before it starts to "oil-can" or dent underfoot. Thinner gauge costs less upfront but flexes more, dents more easily during installation, and is more vulnerable to wind lift on wide spans.

• Always ask for the exact gauge in millimetres, not just "standard" or "thick"
• Match gauge to span — wider purlin spacing needs a thicker sheet
• Coastal and high-wind sites should not compromise on gauge to save cost

Colour permanence works differently across our two product families. On aluminium sheets, colour comes from a painted coating, so its lifespan depends on the coating type and gauge quality. On stone-coated tiles, the colour is baked into the stone-chip granule itself, which is effectively permanent and won't fade or chip the way paint can.

• Ask whether a sheet's coating is polyester, PVDF, or plain mill finish
• Stone-coated colour won't peel, but check for consistent granule coverage at the edges

Ridges, valleys, flashings, seals and gutters — the parts that keep a roof leak-free long after the sheets themselves go up. A roof is only as good as its weakest accessory; most leaks start at a ridge or valley, not in the middle of a sheet.

• Ridge caps and valley troughs should be sourced in the matching profile and colour
• Self-drilling screws with EPDM washers outperform plain nails on longevity
• Budget for accessories as part of the roof, not as an afterthought

Both aluminium and stone-coated roofs are low-maintenance, but "low" doesn't mean "none." A short annual check after the rainy season catches small problems before they become leaks.

• Clear gutters and valleys of leaves and debris at least once a year
• Check ridge caps and screws for movement after major storms
• Rinse coastal roofs periodically to reduce salt-air buildup
